They're holed up outside the venue, out in a back alley that reeks of garbage, mostly, though Sonny's sure that if he paid more attention he'd be able to smell piss as well. He doesn't pay more attention - most of his attention is focused on what's going down tonight, and what little attention he has to spare is mostly enjoying the sun-warm brick against his back where his shirt's caught up a little bit.

Joel's talking, somewhere in the distance, and Sonny closes his eyes to try to block him out, but that doesn't work, not once Joel gets started.

"No, I mean they watch you. They fucking want you, man. And I know you don't notice it, so one of us has to. Hey. Look at me."

For a moment Sonny considers just telling Joel to fuck off, or not saying anything, just keeping his eyes closed, but - he knows better than that, so he keeps his eyes closed for a beat more just to be a dick, then opens them up. Joel's standing in front of him, all up in his space, which, whatever. Sonny's totally not in the mood right now, but it's not like he'll say no.

That's sort of the point of this whole exercise, right? This thing. The point is, Sonny doesn't say no unless he really has to.

Doesn't mean he can't disagree, though.

"They don't want me," he says patiently, because this is a worn-in argument; he's been having it since long before he met Joel. "They want what I'm giving them, and they, like - they mistake me for that feeling they get out there. Like if they get me, it will be the same thing as listening to the music. If they actually had me, they'd figure out that I'm just a guy and get bored, you know? I could be a fucking hideous lizard-beast and there'd still be a bunch of people wanting to bone me."

"Yeah, but you'd be my hideous lizard-beast," Joel says, with what Sonny's pretty sure Joel would like to imagine is a straight face. It isn't. "Stop rationalizing it for a second, okay? Maybe I like thinking about how many people want you, even if they do just want you like that. Maybe that's sort of hot."

"That's not hot," Sonny says, flatly, and he grabs Joel's cigarette to take a drag of it before it burns out. "It's creepy. I can't think of it like that, man. Otherwise it'll be like, I'll be looking at them and - it's like the fucking crowdsurfing thing. I don't want to worry about getting attacked by a mob of sex-crazed zombies."

That's the end of the conversation, because they get called inside, but Sonny knows Joel too well to think he's going to let it drop. Joel sees things, he understands things, and then - occasionally - he uses that knowledge for evil.

Which wouldn't be a problem, if Sonny didn't occasionally find that pretty fucking hot. His life used to be way less complicated.
