So... Sonny's the one with the piercings, and Joel's the one with the tattoos. How about switching it? Preferably as a dare or some such; Joel has to get a piercing, and Sonny has to get a tattoo. Also preferably with fluffy comforting during it (hand-holding, kisses on the cheek, etc.) and perhaps afterwards as well.
