“So, uh, yeah. That’s about it.”
Joel leans forward in the chair and rests his forehead on steepled fingers.
“So what you’re saying is,” he says, “you’re gay?”
“No—I mean, I don’t think so.”
Sonny fidgets and crosses his arms over his chest, almost wilting into the wall across from him.
“Then what are you?”
“I don’t know.” He blinks back tears. “I just know it’s not just girls.”
“…Okay.”
Sonny looks up. “’Okay?’”
“Yeah.”
Joel stands up and take the couple steps between them. And, pulling him forward, he hugs him.
“It’s okay,” he says.
“Really?”
“Yeah.”
“…Thanks.”
